Before you can sit back, relax, and ease your stress, there are a few important steps to complete in preparation for delivery and installation. While it might feel like a lot at first, we’re here to simplify the process for you.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to ensure your spa is ready for its very first soak.

7 steps to a smooth hot tub installation

Prioritizing your wellness starts with creating the right space to unwind, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. An Instinct Spa can be the invitation you need to make time for self-care, relaxation, and the simple joy of taking a moment to slow down.

But before you can enjoy the soothing bubbles and therapeutic benefits of your Instinct Spa, a smooth installation is essential. Setting the foundation properly ensures that your spa will operate safely and effectively, allowing you to focus on what matters most: your well-being.

From choosing the perfect location to connecting power and preparing the water, we’ve broken it down into seven simple steps to make the process as seamless as possible.

Step 1: Choose the perfect spot

The first decision is where to place your new hot tub. While aesthetics play a role, functionality and convenience are key.

Proximity matters: Position your hot tub close enough to your home for easy access, especially in colder months. A spot that’s just a few steps from the door will make those winter soaks more inviting.

Privacy counts: Take a moment to think about the layout of your yard and any nearby homes. Consider using landscaping, privacy screens, or fences to create a secluded space where you can fully unwind.

View considerations: Think beyond the exterior view of your hot tub. What will you see while you’re soaking? Whether it’s a sunset, garden, or stars above, choose a placement that maximizes the visual appeal from inside the spa.

Step 2: Plan for a strong foundation

Hot tubs are heavy, especially when filled with water and people. Your spa needs a foundation that’s level, stable, and capable of supporting the weight.

Concrete pads: A flat concrete slab is one of the best options. It’s durable, low-maintenance, and provides excellent stability. If you are pouring new concrete for your hot tub, consider a 4-inch reinforced pad.

Prefabricated spa pads: These modular bases are easy to install and designed specifically for hot tubs. Your local hot tub dealer, who will deliver your Instinct Spa, can provide guidance on selecting the right spa pad for your space and ensuring it’s properly leveled. Prefabricated spa pads are durable, low-maintenance, and made to support the weight of your hot tub.

Gravel bases: Gravel can also work, provided it’s compacted and level. This option is budget-friendly and allows for water drainage.

Avoid placing your spa directly on grass or dirt, as these surfaces can shift over time and compromise the stability of your hot tub.

Step 3: Prepare for electrical requirements

Your Instinct Spa will need a dedicated electrical connection to operate safely and efficiently. This is not a DIY project — hiring a licensed electrician is essential.

Power specifications: Most Instinct Spas require a 50-amp, 240V GFCI breaker.

Wiring tips: Schedule your electrician to complete the wiring before the delivery date or have them on-site during the installation. Your local hot tub dealer can provide an electrical diagram if needed. Do not fill your new Instinct Spa until the electrician has finished wiring the hot tub.

Placement of the disconnect box: Electrical codes often require a disconnect box to be placed within sight of the spa but at least five feet away. Your electrician will know these requirements.

Step 4: Create a clear path for delivery

The delivery team will need a clear, obstacle-free path to maneuver your spa into place. Walk the intended route from your driveway to the installation site, and remove anything that could obstruct the delivery process.

Trim back overhanging branches or bushes.

Move furniture, garden tools, or decorations that might be in the way.

Consider the width of gates or other entryways to ensure your spa can pass through without issue. Having accurate measurements on hand can make the process smoother and help your local hot tub dealer plan for delivery. Knowing these dimensions will ensure that your spa can be delivered and installed without any last-minute snags.

Step 5: Confirm water access

Filling your hot tub requires a simple garden hose, but it’s worth thinking ahead about where your nearest water source is.

To start your water off clean and clear:

Use a prefilter when filling your spa. This attachment for your garden hose removes heavy metals, sediment, and other impurities, making it easier to balance your water chemistry later.

Plan for water drainage. Your spa will need to be drained periodically for cleaning and maintenance. Ensure the installation site allows for safe water runoff without flooding nearby areas.

Step 6: Test-fit your cover lifter

A cover lifter can make using your spa easier, safer, and more convenient. It also helps extend the life of your cover by reducing wear and tear from repeated handling, while offering added protection and privacy when the spa isn’t in use.

While your Instinct Spa does not come with a cover lifter, your local hot tub dealer can recommend an option that will work with your spa. There are cover lifter options that can maintain the view from your spa while providing easy access and added convenience.

Take note of which side you’ll most often enter the spa from and where you’d prefer the cover to rest when it’s off. Positioning the cover lifter properly can make using your hot tub even more enjoyable.

Step 7: Review your warranty and inspect your spa

Your Instinct Spa comes with a warranty designed to give you peace of mind. Before delivery, review the terms and conditions so you’re aware of what’s covered. If you have questions, ask your retailer for clarification.

When your spa arrives, take a moment to inspect it thoroughly. Check the cabinet for scratches or damage. You also want to make sure it’s positioned exactly where you want it before it’s filled with water.

Getting your Instinct Spa ready for delivery and installation may feel like a big task, but with careful planning, it’s a smooth process. Taking the time to prepare now will ensure that your hot tub is set up for years of enjoyment.
